American Badgers - Site Map
American Badgers (scientific name Taxidea taxus), belong to the Mustelidae family of Carnivores, class Mammalia. They are relatively large furred animals found in some parts of the United States and Canada. Often referred to as digging machines for their ability to dig burrows at a great speed, American Badgers have become the focus of some anecdotic stories.
American Badgers are solitary animals and meet only during mating seasons, in late summer and early autumn. It is supposed that males mate with more than one female and can travel long distances in search of a partner. This fact explains a greater male home range compared to that of females.
American Badgers have been known for a long time. Yet, close habitation with man did not always turn out to be beneficial to both. Particularly, Badgers were considered malignant creatures that had to be destroyed with all means possible, including trapping, shooting, and other ways.
American Badgers are interesting animals whose lifestyle is not yet completely explored. They are called a mysterious species sometimes since it is particularly hard to meet them in the wild. Nocturnal way of life and constant migrations in search of a better habitat full of prey, plus limited numbers of American Badgers in some areas do not allow us to fully examine their habits. Yet, the data available opens up the world of the American Badger a bit and acquaint humans with this specific species.
