Badger Care

There are different opinions as to wether badgers can be kept as pets. In the United States, it is illegal to have pet badgers in some localities and may be legal in others. It is normally prohibited to keep wild animals within the city limits. Badgers cannot be compared to cats or dogs and thus cannot be purchased and sold like pets or livestock. You will have to obtain a license or a state permit if you want to keep a badger as a pet. Badger care is different from pet care as you fancy it.

Badgers are known to be good pets only in case they are raised by humans from their infancy. Though generally badgers have a bad reputation as pets, some still claim they can make good pets if hand raised and provided with proper badger care.

Basically, being a wild animal, badger would usually make exceptionally poor pet and is considered to be potentially dangerous. Badgers have a very strong bite, powerful claws and are notoriously aggressive. Strong and powerful animals, they are not recommended for inexperienced people who don’t have enough information on badger care and just find these animals cute and fun to have around. Moreover, badgers can harbour insects, and have some health problems you may be ignorant of. Having wild badgers in the house is a bad idea due to the risk of any fleas or lice infecting your house.

It is crucial to realize that badger care is not as easy as ordinary pet care. You will have to find a vet experienced in badger health, which can be very difficult to do. Mind that few vets will treat exotic and wild animals. Badgers need extra effort to care for.

Sometimes badgers may intrude your garden and you will have to deal with them no matter wether you have ever planned on having them as pets or not. Badgers may have difficult relationships with other pets you have in your home.

Make sure your pet can always get to safety and never allow such situations when your dog, for instance, can fight with a badger. For other pets, you are advised to purchase a professional-built animal house, with a tough floor, walls and roof; and securely locked. Badger care is a subject you should master in order to become a knowledgeable badger owner. However in most cases wild animals are better off living in the wild.
